He picks up the package from the counter between us and starts opening it. I notice how perfectly the long nail of his pinkie finger fits between the flaps of this transparent plastic that is protecting my new toy from all the dust collected around his shop. He takes a fresh white paper napkin and, with a silent click, he releases the slab of soft silicone from its encasement. He has been doing this for years, 24 hours a day, and he inserts the batteries as if he was spreading butter onto a breakfast toast. Then suddenly, it starts vibrating. But so silently, he asks me to put my hand to it and feel it. Wrapped in a white clean paper napkin, it is the vibration, that separates us from touching. |
